Arthur Russell – Corn

Featured Artist for 8/7/15:

Arthur Russell
Corn (Reissue)
Audika Records
2015

Since his untimely departure in 1992 at the age of 40, Arthur Russell and his music continues to evolve a captivating and prophetic voice. During his life, Russell collaborated with many notable artists – Bootsy Collins, Talking Heads, Phillip Glass, Jennifer Warnes, Allen Ginsburg, to name a few. Most noted for his affinity with the underground dance and disco scene in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, Russell melded a wide range of music genres – classical, disco, dub, experimental, folk, and rock into compositions that continue to attract new listeners. Nevertheless, to this day, his output remains an obscure enigma.

In Corn, one will encounter the familiar lo-fi sonic synthesis of drum machines, electronic pop coupled with cello and other distorted interludes that assembles a remarkably coherent series of songs. If you are looking to add an abstract spacey ensemble to your listen habits, this is the album for you. After the 3rd listen, I was hoping Audika holds additional materials in their Arthur Russell archive. And, that the label would not take another 7 years to release a new (reissue) album.
