Pitchfork – Day 2 – July 19, 2014
Union Park, Chicago

Day two of this Indie/Rap/Noise festival continued to provide a plethora of diversity, texture, and new music. Cadien Lake James of Twin Peaks started the day out in a wheel-chair grinding out a perfervid verse with the Chicago quartet. Ka of Brooklyn offered spoken-verse rap that even hip-hop luminaries will spend time reflecting upon. The day was full of reunions and a solid musical experience. The Cloud Nothings did NOT get rained out this round! And, there was so much more…even in silence, between sets. Perhaps, some will raise an eyebrow at the virtuosity of St. Vincent’s guitar aggressiveness (she’s not just a pretty gal from Tulsa, Oklahoma). The lady can strum and synthesize sound uniquely defined as her own. The evening ended with a reawakening of Neutral Milk Hotel. Jeff Magnum and Co. provided long-loyal fans and new inductees to their seminal works a reminder of why their “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea”, 1998, remains a cult classic with the Indie crowd. This year’s organized format should be a model for other festivals, clean, tight, and acknowledging that new (and sometimes great) music is still churning out 24/7.
