Pitchfork – Day 3 – July 20, 2014
Union Park, Chicago

The final day of the Pitchfork Music Festival provided a little more anger and angst coupled with a hippie vibe. There were some fairly aggressive acts (Deafheaven and Isaiah Rashad). Revibing the 1990s college scene was provided by Speedy Ortiz. The San Francisco heavy metal Deafheaven pumped up the energy via George Clarke’s conductor-styled flailing of arms as sweaty bodies surfed the massive mound of younglings. The Dum Dum Girls offered a brand of Robert Palmer styled contrasting reverb in a fuzzy intonation. Schoolboy Q drowned out the set by Jon Hopkins at times…there appeared to be a sound level battle ensuing. Reading Englands, Slowdive, submerge the audience in a patient shoegaze cloud of sound. DJ Spinn reved up the speed of the show with his “ghetto house” set that has become a mainstay in Chicago’s South Side. Grimes (Claire Boucher) danced…and Kendrick Lamar called the show to a close with a memorable and professional introduction of his youthful (and difficult) upbringing on the streets of Compton, California.
